Imagine the fan base of anime, if it was adapted into a lot of media including light novels and movies. The Japanese anime series Fate/ Stay Night belongs to this category. It could be confusing for people who begin to watch the anime without any knowledge about its prequels. In the world of battles with magic and heroes who does not leave a chance to make their wishes granted, you would not be able to place yourself if you are a late fan of this anime. 

Fate was a Japanese visual novel which developed from an adult game for Windows. The plot focuses on a young mage named Shirou Emiya who becomes a warrior in a battle between “Servants” known as the Holy Grail War. In this war, the seven mages summon a Holy Spirit or Servant to fight the war and the winning servant or master gets his/her wishes granted as the reward. Through each route, Shirou bonds with a heroine and confronts different mages who participate in the war.

  1. Fate/Stay Night (2006)

This anime series aired in 2006 was very similar to and was first of its kind, which was adapted from the original visual novel. Most of the anime have battles and fights. When a lot of those anime visualised the combats of aliens and superheroes or adventurers and mysterious enemies, the Fate anime was about the fight between servants or masters to get the position of Holy Grail. The anime centres around the teenage boy Shiruo Emiya who gets caught in the battle of these superhuman figures called Servants in which one named Saber declares him Master, and realises about the harsh realities in the clash between his ideas of hero and killers.

  1. Fate/ Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works (2014-2015)

Doesn’t the title give you a feeling of a powerful battle? This was another version of the original visual novel and was aired during 2014 and 2015. This anime explores relationship of our teenager protagonist and Rin Tohsaka, a high school student and another Master in the Holy Grail War. The anime also has another character Archer who is the Servant of Rin Tohaska. Watch the anime if you want to see this team fight together the Fifth Holy Grail War against other Masters and Servants.

  1. Fate/ Stay Night (2011-2012)

The 2011 version presents the Fourth Holy Grail war between servants or masters, happening in Fuyuki city. The anime is set 10 years before the first one and hence acts as a prequel to the old 2006 anime. The protagonist is Emiya’s father  Master Emiya Kiritsugu, who accomplishes the fourth war, and however is troubled by the thoughts of world peace and influenced by his love for family.

  1. Fate/stay night: Heaven’s Feel (2017)

The trilogy anime fantasy with its first Fate/stay night: Heaven’s Feel I. presage flower premiered on October 2017. The protagonist undergoes different mental conflicts and battles as he experiences the Holy Grail war in the world of Servants and Masters. However, he soon finds out about a mysterious shadow killing most participants. The second movie Lost Butterfly premiered on January 2019 and the last movie, Spring Song, is slated to open in spring 2020.

This popular anime has a big fan base and is continuously being adapted into movies and alike even after many years. Fate/Grand Order: Shinsei Entaku Ryouiki Camelot is a two-part movie which will adapt the game’s popular “Order VI: The Sacred Round Table Realm: Camelot” storyline. It is planned for release in 2020 and the two installments are titled Wandering; Agateram and Paladin; Agateram

Another TV anime adaptation will premiere in Oct. 2019, titled Fate/Grand Order: Zettai Maju Sensen Babylonia based on the game “Order VII: The Absolute Frontline in the War Against the Demonic Beasts: Babylonia” arc.

You will get another perspective on the Fate universe with The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II, a new anime adaptation that will follow the investigations of a former Master who once participated in the Fourth Holy Grail War. Based on the mystery light novel written by Sanda Makoto and illustrated by Sakamoto Mineji, it takes place between the events of Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night and will premiere in Jul. 2019.

There have also been light novels, spin off series and video games based on this Japanese anime. The light novels are Fate/Zero, Fate/Apocrypha, and Fate/strange fake. The spin off series are Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya and Carnival Phantas. The video games introduced from this anime series are Fate/unlimited codes, Fate/tiger colosseum, Fate/Extra, Fate/Grand Order, and Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star.

  1. Fate/ Apocrypha

In this light novel, there is a parallel universe in which the events of Fate/stay night and Fate/Zero never occurred due to the removal of the Holy Grail after the Third War, resulting in a different Holy Grail War. The story is about the battle between the Red and Black factions from the Mage’s Association and Yggdmillennia respectively.

  1.  Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya

Illyasviel von Einzbern who got first featured in Fate/stay night transformed into a magical girl by the Kaleidostick Ruby. With the Holy Grail War having already been prevented, Illya finds herself and grows in a calm and peaceful atmosphere. However, there occurs a mission to collect the seven Class Cards under the supervision of sorceress Tohsaka Rin which affects Ruby.
