What is Noragami?
Noragami is a Japanese anime series based on the manga series of the same name created by Adachitoka. Adachitoka is both the series’ writer and illustrator.
Noragami follows the story of Hiyori Iki, a teenager, whose life changes forever one day when she almost dies while trying to save the life of another civilian.
At that brief moment, Hiyori’s soul momentarily takes leave of her body and she discovers an alternate dimension (called ‘Far Shore’) populated by ghosts and monsters that coexists with the human world.
The series follows Hikari’s adventures in various realms along with Yatari, a ghostly God, and Yukine, Yatari’s Regalia (a weaponized soul fragment).
The first season of Noragami anime series featuring 12 episodes began airing in January 2014 and concluded in March 2014. The show was later renewed for a second season that had 13 episodes and aired from October to December 2015.
Noragami Season 3 Release Date
Noragami Season 1 and Noragami Season 2 were greatly loved by anime fans and praised all over for its story, character writing, and humor. Given that the last season came out in 2015, fans are long due for a third season.
Initially, there was anxiety among fans that the series might be discontinued for lack of source material but recently in October 2019 Volume 21 of Noragami was published, and in June 2020 Volume 22.
So, the lack of manga content for adaptation is not a problem anymore, thus giving an additional push to the creators for Noragami Season 3.
It is possible that the production for Noragami Season 3 is already in the works but got postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now the future of the series depends on whether the current situation improves or worsens. If things get better, we may get to see Noragami later this year or early next year; if not, the series will get pushed back.
Noragami Summary
Noragami focuses on Hiyori Iki, a human being who becomes a Half-Phantom following a near-death experience.
She befriends Yato, a stray god, and requests him to help her become a normal human again. The series follows their adventures across the human and the other dimension.
Noragami Cast
Hiyori Iki voiced by Maaya Uchida:
Hiyori is a normal teenager who discovers the existence of the Far Shore when her soul is temporarily released after she “dies” while attempting to save someone’s life.
As a result of this, she becomes a creature called a Half Phantom, who flits between the human world and the other world. She requests Yato to help her become normal again and in the process, the two become very close.
It is implied that the two develop mutual feelings for one another and start a relationship.
Yato voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya:
Yato is the Noragami or the ‘stray God’ referred to in the series’ title. He is an unnamed God who wishes to build a shrine for himself.
He used to be the God of Calamity but disavowed the title when he realized he does not like violence.
As a result, he has been forgotten by human beings and experiences intense fear of being erased from people’s memory forever. The two people closest to him are Hiyori and Yukine.
Yukine voiced by Yuki Kaji:
Yukine is Yato Regalia or divine instrument and takes the form of a katana. He died at a young age in his human life.
He has a lot of respect and love for Yato though he does not display it outwardly. He is extremely fond of Hiyori and is like a little brother to her.
He is afraid that once Hiyori reaches an adult age she will forget them and their time together.
Bishamonten voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro:
Bishamonten, commonly known as Bishamon or Veena, is the God of Combat.
She appears as a slim woman with blond hair who has an emotional attachment to her Regalia and is unable to let go of them and hoards them in large numbers.
She despises Yato as he killed a group of her Regalia several years ago.
Kazuma voiced by Jun Fukuyama:
Kazuma is one of the Bishamonten’s Regalia. He initially took the shape of a nail earring but over time transformed into a cherry blossom earring because of her pure love and devotion towards Bishamonten.
He has great respect for Yato despite her mistress’ animosity towards him.
Secondary characters like Rabou, Daikoku, Kuraha, Nora, and Kofuku will also reprise their roles in Noragami Season 3.
Noragami Season 3 Plot
Noragami Season 1 began with Hiyori meeting Yato and focused on their developing relationship and feelings for one another.
Noragami Season 2 continued this storyline and made our protagonists on even wilder adventures together.
Noragami Season 2 did not have a concrete conclusion: it ends on a cliffhanger with Fujisaki being revealed as Yato’s father and Hiyori praying for Yato to become the God of Fortune.
Noragami Season 3 will then explore Yato’s elusive past and the relationship between Yato and his father.
There is also war brewing on the side as Nora, Yato’s former Regalia, has sworn revenge against him for leaving her.
Due to all this, the Far Shore has become a violent and turbulent space. In Season 3, therefore, our heroes will have new challenges to face and dangerous obstacles to overcome.
