What is Rosario To Vampire (Rosario + Vampire)

Rosario To Vampire is an anime series with the main character as Tsukune Aono. The manga was first released in 2004 in the August issue of the Monthly Shonen Jump and it ended in June 2007.

The anime was also released in ten tankobon volumes between October of 2004 and 2007.

History of Rosario to Vampire (Rosario + Vampire)

The writer of the anime series, Akihisa Ikeda, stated in an interview that he was inspired by the manga series named Kaibutsu-kun and had referenced the manga in this series. He also said that he was a big fan of the world of Tim Burton’s works and was specially inspired by Edward Scissorhands.

The character of Edward Scissorhands was his inspiration because “the monster has a sensitive soul”.

Rosario to Vampire (Rosario + Vampire) Main Plot

Rosario to Vampire’s story is centered around the protagonist Tsukine Aono. Because of not having good grades in school, he could not secure admission in the schools in his locality.

His parents then found a boarding school in a remote area and sent him there to study. The name of the school was Yokai Academy and it is more mysterious than it seems.

The boarding school students are not humans. They used to be a monster, witch or some other paranormal entity. Tsukune’s parents had no idea that the school was a school of monsters and Tsukune was the only human there.

Although the students were taught to cohabit with humans, the rule was they had to kill a human if they were spotted inside the campus. 

Tsukune’s first friend in the school was Moka Akashia.

She was an extremely powerful vampire and had grown to become protective of Tsukune because of his blood. While fighting with a school bully, Tsukune removes the rosario around Moka’s neck, thereby revealing that she is a vampire. It is through Moka that Tsukune began making more friends on the campus. He meets Kurumu Kurono, a succubus, and Yukari Sendo, a child prodigy.

Tsukune along with these three girls join the newspaper club of the school and expose the teachers and students who misuse their power and bully others. He also met a witch named Ruby Tojo.

While all this is happening, Mizore Shirayuki, who is a snow fairy, starts to stalk Tsukune. The story then unfolds as Tsukune starts to become famous among the girls of the campus who start liking him romantically. 

A group which called themselves the “Anti Schoolers” posed a threat as they threatened to break the barrier between the monster and the human world. While the school was temporarily closed, Tsukune went back home but along with Moka, Kurumu, Mizore, and Yukari, who are smitten by him, followed him to the human world and hid in his room to stay with him.

In season II of the anime series, we see Moka’s younger sister Koko Shuzen also enrolling in the school.

She also joins the newspaper club. They decide to go to Mizore’s homeland but learn of an organization called the Fairy Tale whose aim was to destroy the human world. While on their visit to the human world, they meet San Otonashi who is a former member of the newspaper club. They faced a troubling situation when they came in front of the Fairy Tale’s 7th branch office. 

Meanwhile, a chinese exchange student named Fangfang Huang had been trying to get Tsukune to join his mafia family.

Moka, who spends a day as her true self, a vampire, is unable to return to her human shape because of her broken rosario which was broken when fighting with the school bully. To fix her rosario, the Newspaper club goes to China. 

While on their visit to China, on reaching Hong Kong, the newspaper club come to know about Moka’s true identity and history.

They learn that “she was infused with First Ancestor Blood by her mother Akasha Bloodriver”.

She had sacrificed herself to protect her children from Alucard who was the first ancestor vampire.

Moka’s half-sister (eldest) then infiltrated the Huang manor and captures “Moka” for bringing her to the Fairy Tale.

This raised the suspicion that Moka is a key element to revive Alucard. After learning this, Tsukune gets his body altered by Tohofuhai, and the rest of the club members train to increase their powers.

Tsukune along the newspaper club members infiltrate the Fairy Tale’s headquarters, the Hanging Garden. Then ensued a series of fights between the members of the newspaper club and the leaders of the Fairy Tale led by their matriach Gyokuro Shuzen.

The newspaper club members finally reach Moka but had to fight Moka’s half-sisters Aqua and Kalua. Gyokuro snatches the opportunity by getting hold of Moka’s rosario and gains control over Alucard. 

However, the fight does not end here. A new character called the Masked King appears and reveals that he is a clone of Alucard’s original vampire form. 

It is then brought to light that all this was a plot devised by him to check if the rosario could control him to not. Following this, he merges again with his original monster self and goes on to ravage Tokyo. 

Within all these fights, Moka is extremely wounded. To help revive Moka, Tsukune “removes all his holy locks, and transforms himself into a First Ancestor vampire.”

With this, they were able to control Alucard but Alucard reveals that he has already hatched eggs in most cities of Japan. Tsukune and his gang then fight against Alucard. During the fight, Tsukune put Moka’s rosario on Alucard to awaken the Akasha inside him.

With the help of Akasha, who cast a self-disintegration spell on him, they were able to get rid of him. 

The story ends with the humans now knowing about the existence, thereby making co-existing difficult. However, Tsukune believes that they will be able to achieve peace.
