Who is Shoto Todoroki?
Shoto Todoroki is a character appearing in the hit Japanese anime series, My Hero Academia. He is a student in class 1-A at U.A. High School, in training to become a Pro Hero. He gained admission into U.A. based on recommendations, partially because he is the son of the legendary Pro Hero, Endeavor. Todoroki is one of the main characters in My Hero Academia. His quirk is a combination of half-cold, half-hot; in other words, he can control both fire and ice.
Shoto Todoroki Appearance
Shoto Todoroki is instantly distinguishable by his striking appearance. Shoto is of average height and has a strong built and muscled body. His hair is half-white and half-maroon, with the color division visible as an even parting right down the middle of his head.
The left side of his hair is maroon while the right white. Shoto’s eyes are heterochromatic: his left eye is blue while his right is grey. The dualistic nature of his facial features responds to that of his quirk. His eyes are thin but elongated, slanting slightly upwards.
The skin on the top left side of his face is wrinkled and burnt due to his mother having poured boiled water on his face when he was a child.
In school, he wears the standard U.A. uniform prescribed for male students: a white shirt under a grey blazer and deep turquoise pants paired with gray and white trainers. His superhero costume initially was an all-white outfit paired with white boots.
Additionally, he had gold straps over both his shoulders. His entire left side is covered with ice, a way of rejecting his firepower contained there to rebel against his father’s tyranny. Later, he transitioned into an all deep blue costume with thick grey shoulder straps, partitioned into sections by red lines, and a belt.
He also wears a metal neckpiece and white boots with a gray line running down them in the middle. During the Provisional Hero License Exam arc, Shoto begins wearing two maroon wrist guards plated with metal to regulate his body temperature.
His costume is further altered during spring break when the metal plating of his wrist guards is lengthened further to reach his knuckles and his wrist guards obtain additional armor support. His jacket now has a large ‘T’ on its front and its belt has notches to hold canisters and medical supplies.
Shoto Todoroki Personality
Shoto has an aloof, distant, and elusive personality.
He does not speak to others more than a few words at a time and is not outgoing or sociable. A lot of his loner behavior is shaped by childhood sufferings at the hands of his controlling, abusive father known as Endeavor, one of the greatest heroes in the world, second only to All Might.
Being forced to become a product of his father’s ambitious dreams, Shoto has developed a cynical outlook on life. His only goal is to prove his father wrong by becoming the greatest hero without using his left side (where fire resides). However, after fighting with Izuku at the Sports Festival, Shoto realizes that he is not and never will be his father.
He can use his fire quirk because it is his to use and shape as he wishes. From then, he develops a close bond with Izuku and starts opening up to other people such as Tenya. In battle, Shoto is extremely focused and relentless in his pursuit of victory.
Though able to overpower most of his classmates easily, Shoto suffers from the limitation of using only half of his full potential by ignoring his firepower.
As the series progresses, Shoto can come to terms with his past and starts using his ice and fire powers in tandem, becoming a powerful hero in the process. He also has a strong sense of duty and justice.
Shoto Todoroki Abilities
Enhanced physique: Having undergone intense training right from childhood, Shoto is more advanced in matters of combat and controlling his quirk in comparison to his other classmates. This is shown when he manages to defeat most of them without any difficulty at the Sports Festival. He has a strong resolve and a thirst to prove himself. He has exceptional agility, endurance, and stamina.
Intelligence: Shoto always maintains his calm and keeps his emotions in check. In battle, he is silent and focussed, with his eyes on victory solely. He can read his opponent’s weaknesses easily and uses that to his advantage. He is great at anticipating moves and can dominate his enemies because of his unhesitating nature and exceptional control over his quirk. He is also great at academics, securing the 5th position in the midterms.
Strong resolve: Having rejected his father’s goals and methods at a young age, Shoto has developed a fierce and unstoppable urge to become no. 1. He does not let this meddle with his sense of justice, however. Apart from beating villains, Shoto is also concerned with protecting his friends and innocent people. Whoever the opponent, Shoto fights without being scared and has an incredible will to succeed that drives him to victory.
Shoto Todoroki Quirk
Shoto’s quirk is called Half-Cold Half-Hot. Using his quirk, Shoto can produce fire from the left side of his body and ice from the right. Due to years of ignoring his left side, Shoto is inexperienced in wielding his true powers in totality.
His quirk has limits too. If he overuses fire, he gets a heat stroke while excessive usage of ice gives him frostbite. His body temperature also gets imbalanced. However, Shoto can evade this by switching between the hot and cold.
Shoto Todoroki Special Moves
Wall of Flames: This move happens when Shoto uses his left side to create a wall of fire which acts as both a shield and an attack towards his enemies.
Heaven-Piercing Ice Wall: In this move, Shoto gives rise to a mountain of ice using his right side to immobilize his opponent and block the territory around.
Flashfreeze Heatwave: This technique is a combination of both his powers, fire, and ice, wherein Shoto first freezes the air around and then spreads scorching flames to create a massive blast.

- His birthday is on January 11.
- Shoto’s surname, Todoroki, contains the Kanji word for “roaring fire” while his first name contains that for “freezing” and “burning.”
- He secured the second position in the U.A. High School entrance exam.
